HOW WILL THE INNOVATIVE IDEA BEHIND METAVERSE CHANGE THE SCENARIO OF SOCIAL MEDIA?


You may remember Second Life, a 3D, immersive, digital equivalent of the physical world. In 2007, roughly a million people were drawn to Second Life and created their own digital avatars in this VR game. They meet and interact with other people via their avatars and handles. And they buy real estate, visit virtualized landmarks and monuments, travel to places, and even own and trade in Second Life’s virtual currency (Linden $).

Second Life was regarded as the VR version of the internet, but it also gave us a first glimpse of the metaverse.

We also got a sense of the metaverse in movies such as the Oscar-winning Avatar, the Matrix series, Ralph and the InternetWreck-it RalphReady Player One, Free Guy, Summer Wars, and Gamer.

The term metaverse was coined by writer Neal Stephenson in his 1992 sci-fi dystopian novel Snow Crash. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, is a 2011 novel that follows a similar plot and is set in the nearish dystopian future where people are forced to escape their unpleasant lives into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS.

The metaverse as it’s currently envisioned will take decades and billions of dollars before it comes to fruition. While the concept has the potential to revolutionize almost every industry and unlock trillions in value, there are a lot of questions that remain unanswered, such as who will govern the metaverse? How will its contents be moderated? What will its existence do to our shared sense of reality?

There’s also a very real possibility that the metaverse never picks up steam, and the experience won’t be adopted by a majority of users. There are many examples of predictions gone wrong; remember when Nadella said chatbots would fundamentally revolutionize computing? 

Ultimately no one knows how this will pan out. In the future will we laugh about how idiosyncratic the idea of a metaverse was, or will we meet in the OASIS?

Have you ever picked up your phone to aimlessly browse social media, only to find yourself sucked into a vortex of terrifying information that captures your attention but destroys your nerves? There’s a word for that: “doomscrolling.”          Droomscrolling— It's not good. It’s called “doomscrolling” (or “doomsurfing”) — a portmanteau that Merriam-Webster defines as “referring to the tendency to continue to surf or scroll through bad news, even though that news is saddening, disheartening or depressing”. It's 11:37pm and the pattern shows no signs of shifting. At 1:12am, it’s more of the same. Thumb down, thumb up. Twitter, Instagram, and—if you’re feeling particularly wrought/masochistic—Facebook. Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic left a great many people locked down in their homes in early March, the evening ritual has been codifying: Each night ends the way the day began, with an endless scroll through social media in a desperate search for clarity.  

Brains as Computers- Computers as Brains?

The metaphor, analogy, theory, or reality of brains as computers? A computer is a programmable device, whether it be electrical, analogue, or quantum. Due to his dualist belief that the mind programmes the brain, Wilder Penfield said that the brain functions just like a computer. If this kind of dualism is disregarded, specifying what a brain "programme" might entail and who is authorised to "programme" the brain will be necessary in order to identify the brain to a computer. This is a metaphor if the brain "programmes" itself while it learns. This is a metaphor if evolution "programmes" the brain. In fact, the brain-computer metaphor is frequently used in the literature on neuroscience rather than as an analogy, or explicit comparison, by importing computer-related terms into discussions of the brain. For example, we claim that brains compute the locations of sounds, and we speculate about how perceptual algorithms are implemented in the brain.
